W HOTEL HOLLYWOOD

Architect • HKS, Inc.
Artist • Christian Moeller
Photography • Eric Laignel

In the central plaza area of the W Hotel Hollywood, Christian Moeller installed a monumental work integrated into the East wall along the red carpet. Pushing is anodized aluminum and is nearly 8 x 32 feet. The artist manipulated the material to deliver the perception of the image using digital means. The relief of the sculptural wall makes an image in “bitmap graphics”, created by casting shadows on the surface. Perception of the texture and imagery varies depending on the viewer’s point of view. Up close, the texture reads more abstractly, and yet from even a slight distance, the clarity of the image is apparent.
